HSE finds high-risk synthetic cannabinoids in vapes and edibles sold in Ireland

Laboratory testing found potent synthetic cannabinoids and other potentially harmful compounds in products obtained from shops and the illicit market, including products labelled as cannabidiol.

The HSE has warned that high-risk cannabinoids have been detected in vapes, vape “Juice” and edible products sold in Ireland.

Its Emerging Drug Trends Laboratory analysed 76 vape or vape-liquid samples obtained from shops and the illicit market during 2026.

The HSE reported that 28 samples contained hexahydrocannabinol, known as HHC, or related semi-synthetic compounds. Eight contained potent synthetic cannabinoids, while 10 contained acetate compounds that the HSE said can be associated with lung disease.

Cannabis or related compounds were detected in 12 samples, while 41 contained cannabidiol, or CBD.

Products may not contain what their labels claim

The HSE said some products labelled as CBD contained HHC or novel synthetic cannabinoids.

Nicki Killeen, the HSE’s Emerging Drug Trends manager, said consumers could not reliably know what they were taking from a product’s label. The HSE also reported finding potent synthetic cannabinoids, sometimes referred to as “spice”, in products sold through shops and in products sold as THC through the illicit market.

The substances identified have been associated with loss of consciousness, severe intoxication, withdrawal symptoms and cases of psychosis, according to the HSE.

HHC has been a Schedule 1 controlled drug in Ireland since 29 July 2025. Its importation, production, possession, sale and supply are illegal.

HSE advice and support

The HSE says it is safest not to use illicit or unknown drugs. Its harm-reduction advice includes not using alone and avoiding combinations with alcohol or other drugs.

Anyone who becomes seriously unwell should call 999 or 112. The HSE advises telling paramedics what was taken and, where possible, providing the product or packaging. Concerns about a cannabinoid product can be reported to drugs.ie@hse.ie.
