The HSE is inviting nurses and midwives who want to re-enter practice after a prolonged absence to apply for its Return to Nursing and Midwifery Practice Programme, which is designed to support participants to update knowledge and refresh clinical skills.
What the programme is for:
The programme is a structured route back into practice for nurses and midwives who have been away from professional practice for five years or more, providing an opportunity to rebuild competence and confidence through updated learning and clinical skill development.
Who can apply:
The HSE states applications are accepted from nurses and midwives registered in the following disciplines:
- General Nursing
- Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing
- Intellectual Disability Nursing
- Midwifery
- Children’s Nursing
Applicants must be on the active register, or be eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
How assessment is structured:
The HSE notes that Competency Assessment Tools are in place and outlines domains used to frame competence, including professional values and conduct, clinical decision-making, knowledge and cognitive skills, communication, teamworking and management, and leadership/professional scholarship.
Vetting and clearance requirements
The HSE advises that Garda Vetting is processed by the hospital or service where the participant undertakes clinical placement. It also states that international police clearance is required before starting the programme for applicants who have worked outside Ireland, and that any related costs are the applicant’s responsibility.
